100 Years of high-performance lubricants

Our history

Founded in 1914 on the Midland Valley Railroad in Sperry, Oklahoma. Tulsa Refined Oil Company (TROCO) has been blending high performance lubricants in the United States for nearly 100 years.

1914

Tulsa Refined Oil Company was founded

Tulsa Refined Oil Company, founded in 1914, (TROCO) – Blending high performance lubricants and supplying fuel and lubricants to the Tulsa Area through filling stations. The filling stations were sold off and TROCO continued to supply lubricants to the Oil Fields, Farmers and Industrial businesses.

1932

Royal Manufacturing Established

Royal Manufacturing was established during the depression years, and the Mallorys began running operations.

1942

Royal Purchased by the Mallory Family

The Mallory family purchased Royal during World War II and positioned it as a specialty product supplier to the oil fields, providing drilling mud, tool joint compounds, and rust preservatives for products shipped overseas.

1954

Purchase and Consolidation of TROCO

The Mallory family purchased Tulsa Refined Oil Co. (TROCO), consolidated the two businesses, and expanded the marketing area to surrounding states to include industries such as industrial plants and off-highway equipment.

1976

Acquisition of Wright Oil Co.

Royal’s growth continued with the acquisition of Wright Oil Co. in San Antonio, Texas, from a leading construction contractor. This dramatically increased the operating territory to all of Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, Mexico, and parts of Louisiana. As a sales and manufacturing group, Royal expanded its quality control and research and development labs, placing a strong emphasis on technology.

1987

Royal developed the leading CSC greases

Royal began work on an improved method to produce a line of calcium sulfonate complex (CSC) greases.

The goal was to create a CSC grease that would exceed the performance criteria of the well-established lithium complex greases while improving on existing CSC greases already in the market. CSC greases offered excellent rust and corrosion protection, strong load-carrying capability, and high-temperature performance, but they struggled in colder climates.

The objective was to deliver a highly improved CSC grease that:

  1. Offered superior features compared to lithium complex greases
  2. Retained all the benefits of current CSC greases
  3. Delivered improved versatility in cold environments
  4. Extended lubricating life in seawater and other wet applications
  5. Served as a superior “food-grade” grease with heavy-duty performance

Through Royal’s development process and innovative techniques, all five goals were successfully achieved. Royal introduced the leading CSC greases to the market.

2006

Royal Moves to Schertz, TX

Royal relocated to a brand-new 14-acre facility in Schertz, a suburb of San Antonio, Texas, significantly increasing lubricant production capacity.

2008

Tulsa expansion

Royal expanded grease-making capacity by installing two additional grease kettles and packaging equipment in Tulsa. A new grease plant was also built in Schertz, Texas, adding 16 more kettles to increase production.

2012

Consolidation of Wright & TROCO

Royal merged TROCO and Wright into the Royal-branded product line and began marketing Royal in industrial sectors across the United States and abroad, growing the distribution footprint to over 30 countries.

Royal continued to innovate, producing specialty greases such as polyurea, calcium sulfonate, aluminum complex, and bio-based, synthetic, and food-grade varieties. Royal is ISO-certified and holds NSF® H1 registrations as well as Kosher, and Halal certifications.
