Are You Ready for the GHS Change?

Is Your Company GHS Ready?

It’s just around the corner that making the jump to the new GHS compliance will be upon us. And many companies have questions let unanswered. Recently, the U.S. has adopted the United Nations Global Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals. In theory, the GHS system would be implemented to all companies needing to make the change. However, with an implementation date around the corner and growing concerns about the compliance and regulations going along with the transition, many are left wondering, are we really ready?

So what seems to be the issue? Well, a multitude of things. Specifically for lubricants, the most dramatic shift and biggest buzz is related to additives and the amount of necessary information disclosed within the new labeling confines. Previously, it was unnecessary to list many additives that were used simply because the amounts found within the lubricant were looked at as insignificant.

Now, GHS wants all additives to be listed within the confines of the Safety Data Sheet. So now companies that have to divulge what was otherwise considered proprietary information, is free and open to practically anyone. As you could probably guess, this has made many companies reluctant to be the first to make the leap.

It has even lead to the reduction of certain additives simply because they won’t meet the necessary threshold limit to disclose its use in a lubricant. In short, companies are trying to avoid making the change.

With questions about disclosing additive amounts, changing formulations, switching labels and adding new printing technology, there is a lot to prepare for before the GHS compliance due date.
